How a Trucking & Logistics Company Regained Financial Accuracy Through Comprehensive Accounting Cleanup and Controls

Client Background

An A Team Client, an established trucking and logistics service provider, offers cost-effective freight and cargo transportation, managing all aspects of driver operations and related expenses. While the business delivered reliable service to its customers, it lacked the internal accounting expertise necessary to maintain accurate financial records.

As discrepancies surfaced across financial statements and prior tax filings, leadership recognized the need for Fractional Controller and Bookkeeping support to uncover the root causes, correct persistent accounting errors, and restore confidence in their financial reporting.

Challenges

When The A Team began the engagement, the company was facing widespread accounting issues resulting from inexperienced bookkeeping practices and inconsistent financial processes:

Limited Accounting Expertise

The Client’s books were maintained by a well-meaning but inexperienced employee with minimal knowledge of accounting principles. This led to incorrect expense classifications, incomplete balance sheet entries, and inaccurate reconciliations. Over time, these errors accumulated, creating substantial reporting inconsistencies.

Discrepancies Across Financial Statements

The A Team identified significant inaccuracies on the Client’s balance sheet, asset schedules, and equity accounts. In some cases, balance sheet accounts had been mistakenly deleted, further complicating reconciliations, and distorting financial results.

Errors in Prior Tax Filings

The Client had relied on a low-cost tax preparer whose work lacked the necessary depth and review. Several prior-year returns contained errors including misclassified expenses and missing balance sheet details. These inaccuracies caused misalignment between tax filings and internal financial reports and heightened compliance risks.

Data Integrity Issues and Audit Challenges

Deleted accounts, inconsistent data entry, and incomplete financial records required The A Team to conduct an extensive audit trail review. Without reliable historical data, the Client lacked visibility into their true financial position and could not make informed, data-driven decisions.

The A Team Solution

The A Team’s Fractional Controller and Staff Accountant executed a comprehensive accounting cleanup and a system correction project to rebuild financial accuracy and establish long-term reliability.

Cleanup and Error Correction

We conducted an in-depth review of prior-year financials, identifying and correcting miscategorized expenses, balance sheet discrepancies, and equity capital issues.  This included rebuilding deleted accounts, reconciling missing transactions, and correcting asset schedules so the books reflected accurate and complete information.

Chart of Accounts Restructuring

We designed and implemented a fully restructured chart of accounts to create clear, consistent categorization of revenue, expenses, assets, and liabilities. This provided the Client with a solid foundation for accurate reporting and easier ongoing bookkeeping.

Reconciliation and Restoration of Prior Data

The A Team imported updated financial data into QuickBooks, posted required journal entries, and reconciled both prior and current periods. This work ensured that all balances were properly stated, and that financial reporting was aligned across all periods.

Collaboration with CPA to Amend Tax Filings

Once the financials were corrected, we worked closely with the Client’s CPA to amend prior-year tax filings, making sure that all returns reflected accurate and verified information and reduced the risk of future compliance issues.

Results

After carefully evaluating and reorganizing the company’s accounting processes, The A Team restored accuracy across the financial records and created a more dependable reporting structure. The business now benefits from clear statements, a consistent system, and a stronger base for decision-making.
